Screen printing, DTG or embroidery? The complete textile-finishing comparison
Which textile finishing fits your project? We compare screen printing, digital print (DTG), DTF and embroidery by cost, quantity, durability and look — with a clear recommendation.
Whether it’s a club jersey, corporate apparel or merch for an event: choosing the right textile finishing determines the look, durability and price. Screen printing, digital print, DTF and embroidery each have clear strengths and limits. This guide helps you find the right method — fast and without the jargon.
The four key methods at a glance
Screen printing — the classic for larger runs
Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil (the “screen”) onto the fabric. A separate screen is made per colour, which creates a one-time setup cost but makes each piece very cheap at higher volumes.
- Strengths: bold, opaque colours, extremely durable, ideal from medium quantities up
- Limits: only pays off from a certain quantity, less suited to photo-realistic multi-colour motifs
Digital print (DTG) — photo-realistic, even as a single piece
Direct-to-garment (DTG) prints the design straight into the fabric — much like an inkjet printer. Gradients and detail are no problem, and there’s no per-colour setup cost.
- Strengths: fine detail, many colours, economical from a single piece
- Limits: works best on light cotton, pricier than screen printing at very high volumes
DTF — flexible on almost any material
Direct-to-film (DTF) transfers the design via a transfer film. The method is especially versatile and works on a wide range of materials and colours.
- Strengths: high flexibility, good opacity even on dark fabrics
- Limits: the print sits slightly on top of the fabric
Embroidery — premium and long-lasting
Embroidery stitches the design into the textile with thread. It looks especially high-end and is practically indestructible — the first choice for polo shirts, caps and workwear.
- Strengths: premium feel, highest durability, unaffected by washing
- Limits: unsuited to fine detail and gradients, large areas get expensive
Which method when? The quick recommendation
- Many identical pieces, bold colours → screen printing
- Photo motif or small quantity → digital print (DTG)
- Dark or unusual materials → DTF
- Premium look, logo on polo/cap → embroidery
A good rule of thumb: the larger the run and the simpler the motif, the more screen printing or embroidery make sense. The more individual and smaller, the more digital print fits.
